About the Carol
"O Little Town of Bethlehem" was first written by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) in 1868. He was inspired to write the lyrics after visiting Bethlehem in 1865, which was then in the Sanjak of Jerusalem in the Ottoman Empire.
Lyrics Back to Top ↑
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth
How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of his heaven.
No ear may hear his coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

True. Jesus said,
Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
While we do not know when Jesus was born, we know that the angels visited the shepherds at night.
O morning stars together
The morning stars sang at the creation of the world, and there is little doubt that they would sing at the birth of Jesus.
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth
It is interesting that angels and men sing about Jesus bringing peace to men on earth when he said,
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of his heaven.
Except this is not necessarily true. If it were, the New Testament writers would not write,
Contrary to this line, Jesus's second coming will be obvious.
Where meek souls will receive him still,
Jesus did say in the Sermon on the Mount,
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Jesus ascended to heaven on a cloud, and he will descend from heaven back to us.
Be born to us today
Is the author thinking Jesus will come again through birth? As covered above, this would be incorrect.
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel
